Mount Royal: A Spiritual and Scenic Haven in the Heart of Montréal

Montréal, a city that radiates strength and grace, has a pulse that beats with vibrant might. This summer, I explored one of its most iconic landmarks—Mount Royal. It’s a space where nature, history, and spirituality converge, offering a retreat from the city's bustling streets while also being a testament to Montréal's dynamic and inclusive spirit.

The Origins of Mount Royal

Mount Royal, or "Mont Royal" as locals call it, stands as the city's crown jewel, a volcanic hill formed millions of years ago. The mountain’s name traces back to French explorer Jacques Cartier, who christened it in 1535. Over time, Mount Royal became a centerpiece for Montréal’s identity, offering both practical benefits as a green lung and spiritual significance as a sanctuary.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory: A Beacon of Faith and Devotion

Perched on the northern slope of Mount Royal is the awe-inspiring Saint Joseph’s Oratory, the largest church in Canada. Founded in 1904 by Brother André Bessette, who later became Saint André, this basilica is more than just a place of worship. It’s a beacon of hope and healing. Pilgrims from across the world come to the oratory to light candles, seek solace, or climb the 99 steps leading to its entrance on their knees as an act of devotion.

Walking into the basilica, I felt a profound sense of peace. The architecture, with its towering dome, invites visitors to look upward, a subtle reminder to reflect and find clarity amidst life’s challenges. The votive chapel, glowing with thousands of candles, feels like a sanctuary of wishes and prayers, a tangible representation of faith. For me, the Oratory wasn’t just a landmark—it was a space that encouraged introspection and gratitude.

Mount Royal Park: A Visionary Escape

Just beyond the oratory lies Mount Royal Park, a masterpiece designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also co-designed New York’s Central Park. Created in the late 19th century, the park was envisioned as a place where people from all walks of life could gather, reconnect with nature, and find respite from urban life.

The trails of Mount Royal Park are a hiker’s dream, winding through lush greenery and leading to the renowned lookout point, the Kondiaronk Belvedere. Standing there, the panoramic view of Montréal’s skyline is breathtaking. It’s a space that inspires awe and a sense of connection—not just to the city but to something greater. The park’s name, “Mount Royal,” even hints at its regal role as a gathering place for the community.

A Spiritual Journey and a Celebration of Life

Mount Royal is more than just a mountain or a park; it’s a symbol of Montréal’s soul. Its spiritual landmarks like Saint Joseph’s Oratory remind us of the power of faith and perseverance, while its natural spaces encourage us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty around us. Whether it’s through the quiet reverence of lighting a candle at the oratory or the exhilaration of reaching the Kondiaronk Belvedere, Mount Royal offers something deeply personal to every visitor.

On this trip, Montréal reaffirmed its inclusive and dynamic spirit. Old friends embraced, new connections were made, and enduring memories were formed along its vibrant streets. It was also a reunion with a special friend of mine—someone who has always been there to encourage me to reach for my dreams. This trip wasn’t just about the city, but about a dream coming full circle. It’s a testament to the kind of friendship I truly value, one where support, inspiration, and shared moments make it all worthwhile. Friendship goals, hands down.

As I gazed out from Mount Royal’s summit, I raised an imaginary toast to this incredible city: Montréal, your heart beats strong, your spirit shines bright, and your grace endures. Here’s to you.
